In this family-friendly, road-tripping itinerary, we present a rendition of Central Europe that will delight and energize travellers of all ages. Take in the Swiss classics of Zurich and Lucerne, but also the lesser-known North-east around Walensee, where the mountains are less crowded and you can cruise down the region’s best mountain coasters. Drive east to Austria and spend a couple of days around lovely and low-key Innsbruck, before crossing the Brenner Pass into the heart of the coolest alpine kid on the block these days, the Italian Dolomites. Two weeks is best for this itinerary, but it is possible to do a distilled version in 11-12 days, or an extended one for 3 weeks.
This journey outline is by no means fixed. As the traveller takes centre stage in our planning – from the type of lodging to daily activities – your journey will be crafted to suit you.
Arrive in Zurich and jump right into the city’s highlights. Make a beeline to Lindt’s Chocolate Museum, and in the evening get on board a fun e-tuk-tuk tour with fondue included.
Just an hour away from Zurich, Walensee is a beautiful and peaceful region. Participate in many family friendly activities such as a Walensee lake cruise (without the tourist crowds), mountain scootering, tobogganing and walks at Filzbach and Flumseberg, and the longest mountain coaster in Switzerland’s Churwalden. This will be a big hit for the young and the young at heart.
If you want more chocolate, we can also arrange a private workshop at the House of Laderach.
Enjoy another quintessentially Swiss City, Lucerne, but get off the beaten path there too. Spend a day or two checking out the Swiss Transport Museum, Mount Pilatus or Mount Rigi, and then meet an excellent local guide who will show you the best of Lucerne’s surrounding countryside on a fun e-cargo bike.
Visit a farm that will open exclusively for you, and enjoy freshly made Angus beef burgers grilled to perfection over a breathtaking view of Lucerne.
Travel east to the amiable Austrian city of Innsbruck, surrounded by the Tyrol mountains. Base yourself there to explore its attractions such as the Swarovski Crystal World, Nordkette Mountain with many outdoor attractions and the charming old town.
Head south over the Brenner Pass into the heart of the Dolomiti, which is now the coolest kid on the block when it comes to the Alps. Base yourself either at Alp di Siusi, Brixen, Sesto or Cortina d’Ampezzo in some of the top mountain lodges in Europe and enjoy world-class hiking, outdoor activities like ziplines, mountain coasters, horse and horse-carriage rides, alpaca treks and even rowboats in a sublime setting.
After your adventure, you can travel back to Zurich, or continue to Milan or Venice to end your trip.
