How Cool is Copenhagen?

HOW COOL IS COPENHAGEN?

Stylish to a fault, the Danish capital serves up equal measures of timeless design, an aspirational hygge approach to life, cool city vibes, and buzzy food scene. Isn’t it time to plan a visit?

Not for nothing is Copenhagen the global capital of design, style and fashion. For starters, like an ageless supermodel, it has no bad angles. From the lovely period architecture lining photogenic canals and vast green parks to that unique Nordic penchant for understated elegance - evident in everything from its world-class museums to first-rate hotels - the city has it all. What more could you ask for in a winter getaway?

STAY

Regardless of what’s on your bucket-list, it makes sense to pick a hotel in the old city, especially around the Nyhavn quarter. At the top of our list is the Sanders - a cosy retreat that’s full of character and smartly furnished. The conservatory restaurant downstairs is first-rate for its mod-Nordic menu. From the Sanders, the major museums, retail hotspots, and restaurants are all within easy reach.

EAT

Bring your appetite, because in Copenhagen, the question is not so much ‘Where to eat?’, but ‘What to eat next?’. Beau Marché is a genuine gem, tucked away in a side street and our go-to for delicious tartines and cakes. Zeleste is another neighbourhood favourite for great wines and seafood, whilst Cafe Victor serves up classic Danish fare (think delicious pickled herring) and Levi boasts beautiful people, lively buzz and an inventive modern Italian menu.

SEE

Copenhagen is a walking city with all the major attractions crammed near one another. Which means, there’s a lot to see, so pack comfortable walking shoes. And for everything else, the local subway is clean, safe and oh-so-easy to navigate. Or, take a canal tour. It’s touristy, but it’s also a very relaxing and informative way to see a lot. The National Gallery of Denmark has an astounding collection of Greek antiquities, whilst Designmuseum Denmark is ground zero for classic Danish mid-Century design. Whatever you do, do not miss ‘Start Again the Lament’ - a haunting sound and light installation currently showing at the Cisternerne (till 30 Nov).

SHOP

Drop by VIPP for the very best of modern Danish homeware and home furnishings. New Mags features a covetable collection of design, travel and cookbooks and magazines, whilst The Apartment is addictive for its beautifully styled rooms with all the furniture and homeware in it available for sale. Meanwhile, Illum Bolighus is a wonderland of classic 20th-century Danish and Scandinavian design, all stylishly displayed over four vast floors.
